This workshop is designed for instructors and studio owners looking to improve their skills in working with and appealing to plus size aerial students. We will cover plus size student experiences and barriers they experience in trying to attend aerial classes, how to make plus size students feel supported at your studio, and teaching and spotting techniques so that you can leave feeling more confident in teaching and providing an inclusive environment for people of various body sizes.
The Teaching Plus Size Aerial Students workshop was developed by Ginger based on her experiences as a plus size aerial student for the past 12 years and aerial coach for the past 8. She realized that most of the standard aerial curriculum and recommended progressions were based on small, slim bodies and didn’t take into account how different body makeups may need adaptations or alternatives. As Ginger began to share more and more of her personal progress on social media she got a lot of comments and messages from other plus sized people who were thrilled to see her videos because they didn’t think that aerial was “for them.” This led Ginger to develop this workshop to educate other aerial coaches as well as to start her own program of beginner aerial classes specifically for plus sized students at her home studio in Austin, Texas, Sky Candy. This experience as well as feedback from and discussions with plus size students has helped this workshop to continue to develop and grow over the years into a comprehensive guide to creating a safe space for and teaching plus size aerial students.
Ginger has now taught this workshop in various forms to instructors and studios across the globe, both in person and online. If you are interested in bringing Ginger to your studio or setting up a virtual workshop, please send an email to gingersnaps@skycandyaustin.com.
